Sports notebook: Lady Hornets hand Hernando first loss

It was a busy week for the Weeki Wachee girls basketball teams, with four games on the slate. But in the process, the Lady Hornets picked up a big victory over a county rival.
Facing undefeated Hernando in a Class 6A, District 7 matchup on Tuesday, Weeki Wachee pulled out a 33-25 triumph.

On Monday, the Lady Hornets (6-4 overall, 2-2 6A-7) beat South Sumter, 45-24, and added a 40-31 win over Hudson on Wednesday. Crystal River defeated Weeki Wachee on Friday, 50-37.
The Lady Leopards (4-1 overall, 2-1 6A-7) rebounded to beat Fivay on Thursday, 48-41. Springstead went 2-1, downing South Lake on Tuesday, 50-45, and Nature Coast on Thursday, 66-57, then lost to Mitchell on Friday, 68-58, to sit at 3-2 overall and 1-1 in 7A-8.
Hernando Christian Academy has gotten off a roaring start, as the Lady Lions are 6-0 for the first time in team history. On Tuesday, they defeated First Academy-Leesburg, 54-24, then knocked off New Port Richey-Genesis Prep on Thursday, 36-34, and Tampa-Bayshore Christian on Friday, 47-40.
Senior Cayla Phillips is averaging 16.8 points and 6.2 steals, while Milly Jackson is at 11.2 points, 8.3 rebounds and 4.3 steals.
In boys hoops, Central and Crystal River lit up the scoreboard in a double-overtime classic on Tuesday night, with the Bears coming out on top, 115-111. The Bears (2-1 overall, 2-0 6A-7) lost to Sunlake on Friday, 74-56.
Nature Coast (3-0 overall, 2-0 6A-7) edged Springstead on Monday, 50-49. Hernando (2-1 overall, 2-1 6A-7) notched its first two wins of the season, 58-51 over Weeki Wachee on Tuesday and 69-48 versus Lecanto on Friday.
Senior Muhannad Abdaldean is averaging 16.3 points, 6.0 rebounds, 1.7 steals and 1.7 for the Leopards, and junior Noah Batten is chipping in 13 points, 6.3 rebounds, 2.7 steals and 1.3 blocks. Junior Ygenio Booker is adding 14.3 points, 4.0 assists and 2.7 steals.
The Nature Coast boys soccer team collected a 5-0 win over Hernando on Monday and an 8-0 victory against Zephyrhills on Friday, sandwiching its 1-1 tie at Weeki Wachee on Wednesday. The Sharks sit at 5-3-2 overall, 3-2-2 in 3A-7.
Before tying Nature Coast, the Hornets (3-1-2 overall, 3-1-2 3A-7) notched a 6-1 win over Wesley Chapel on Monday behind three goals and an assist by Bailey Hypes. Harry Flanagan had a goal and three assists.
Nature Coast’s girls soccer team had a strong week, going 3-0 by beating Hernando on Monday, 7-1, Weeki Wachee on Wednesday, 8-1, and Zephyrhills on Friday, 5-1. Senior Amanda Leyden, who had one goal on the season before this week, scored eight combined over those three contests, helping the Lady Sharks improve to 5-6 overall, 5-2 in 3A-7.
