The Strikers under 14 girls soccer team began their journey together in November, 2015; with the first game being held on the 7th at the Anderson Snow Soccer Complex. Within their age division; there were three other teams to compete against; including the Citrus (Heat), the Brooksville (Hornets) and a 2nd U14 from FHYSC (Twisters). While some of these girls have played soccer for years, others have played only a short time.
They each came together as one unit to accomplish one goal under the direction of Coach Jim Cheze; a seasoned coach involved with the league for several years. Their common goal was to have a successful, well-played, sportsmanship-filled season. Coach Jim led these girls to an amazing 9 game regular season ending with 7 wins, 1 loss and a tie. Coach Jim afforded the young ladies the opportunity of learning to play several positions; which they all excelled at.
The Strikers hard work paid off in the end; this team became the first seed to compete in this past weekend’s Sunshine Cup tournament held at Ernie Weaver Park in Brooksville. All teams played twice on Saturday and once on Sunday. The Strikers continued on their winning streak by defeating Citrus (5-0) and moving on to defeat the Twisters (2-1). Again, these young ladies pushed ahead and excelled by moving into Sunday’s play against Brooksville (Hornets) and defeating them (5-1).
On Saturday, February 20th, the Strikers played their final match of the postseason against the Twisters. They fought a long and hard battle on the field during a warm sunny Florida winter afternoon. Amid committed penalties; amazing goal attempts and beautiful passes between teammates the Strikers defeated the Twisters (2-1); resulting in an undefeated postseason record. Congratulations to FHYSC U14 Girls on your 2016 Sunshine Cup win.
