JAN. 14, 2020- Now with the holiday tournaments around the area finished up, high school sports shifts back to the winter scene as basketball begins to sit center stage. With solid programs like Nature Coast, Springstead, Hernando, Central, Hernando Christian, and Weeki Wachee all ready to take the court, we’ve got you covered. Below are a few games we think are the matchups to watch for this week in Hernando County for high school basketball on the girl’s end.

Weeki Wachee (12-5) at Lecanto (11-3): The best match-up of the week in girls basketball for teams from Hernando County is when Weeki Wachee travels up to Citrus County to face Lecanto. The Panthers are the top team from Citrus County and provide the Hornets with a good start to the year 2020. Weeki Wachee remained active over the winter break and will spring into action when they face Lecanto.

Central (0-9) at Citrus (1-12): the Best chance for Central to win a game so far this season comes this week when they face Inverness Citrus, who has won just one game this year. It makes for a good match-up on paper right now and both programs are in need of a win. If the Bears could pick up a win, it would be huge for Central heading into 2020.

Springstead (4-13) at Nature Coast Technical (7-6): Both the Eagles and the Sharks are battling to make a strong push in January in advance of district tournaments coming into play. A win for Springstead would help in regards to the strength of schedule for making the playoffs. Nature Coast is on the other side of the spectrum when it comes to competing for a district championship.

The Villages (3-12) at Hernando (6-9): Hernando’s week of games isn’t the strongest, but they will face a feisty The Villages group that will come to Brooksville during the middle of the week for a regular-season match-up. The Leopards are aiming to reach the .500 mark in January and this week’s slate of games would provide a great opportunity to do so.

Seven Rivers Christian (7-6) at Hernando Christian (14-1): The Lions suffered their first loss of the season when they fell 56-42 to Bishop McLaughlin a couple of games ago. Now Hernando Christian is looking to start up another winning streak and will begin against Seven Rivers Christian. Seven Rivers enters Hernando County with a record of 7-6 and poses a threat to HCA’s one-loss record.
