Notes from the Museums

The coronavirus continues to keep the doors closed for regular tours at the May-Stringer Museum. The downtime, however, is allowing for another, long-needed, project to be started…wallpaper removal!

The second-floor bedroom known as the Jessie May room has had peeling paint and wallpaper for years. The damage was caused by moisture coming from a damaged window in the attic above. Since the window (and most of the other windows in the Museum)  was repaired by Steve Quillian and the Wood Window Makeover team of Artisans from Tampa, the ceiling and walls can now be addressed.

The Brooksville Junior Service League did restoration work on the room back in 1988. It is unfortunate that the paper is beyond restoration and has to be removed. Anyone who has removed wallpaper can tell you that even though the edges may be peeling and loose, removing the rest is a monumental chore. Museum Curator, Morgan Wick says, “It feels like they put this wallpaper on with cement!” The paper covers the original plaster walls and painstaking care is being taken to preserve the plaster.

Again, the Junior Service League has pledged to help (32 years later) with painting the room once the wallpaper is totally removed and any plaster repairs are made. What a partnership!

The Jessie May room is a favorite with children because it displays period children’s clothing and toys. It is also a favorite of the paranormal guests who hopefully wait to hear a cry from Jessie May’s spirit!
