Members of the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) Aviation Unit helped locate a man reported missing from his home near Lake Lindsey Road earlier this month.

On Dec. 7, Domingo Febres, 69, was reported missing by his daughter who said he went out to check his mail and take a walk when he went missing. The woman believed the man, who suffered from the onset of dementia and from nerve damage caused by a previous fall, may have been injured or lost in the woods nearby.

Deputies along with an HCSO K-9 Unit, the agency’s Aviation Unit, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), and a bloodhound from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) launched a search for the man.

While the search was underway, a family member was able to contact Febres via cell phone who said that he was injured but could hear the helicopter overhead.

Just after midnight, the HCSO Aviation Unit located the man lying on his back in the woods and directed deputies on the ground to his location.

After assessing his injuries, Febres was transported to Oak Hill Hospital where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

He is expected to make a full recovery.
