The Hernando Sun editor, publisher, co-founder, and owner Julie Maglio has been appointed to the National Newspaper Association (NNA) Foundation’s board. The NNA is the United States’ largest newspaper trade association with 2,300 members. It has been serving its members since 1885.

Julie Maglio and her team started a brand new newspaper over seven years ago in an age when many newspapers are closing. Her artistic side loves the beauty that can be created in print. She also maintains a state-of-the-art website. As a small business owner, she is involved in all aspects of the paper including editing, layout, sales, legal notices, mailing, reporting, payroll, and taxes.

She received tremendous support on mailing the newspaper from Max Heath, NNA’s longtime Postal Chair, and Tonda Rush, NNA’s legal counsel and director of public policy. Having a newspaper trade organization that she could contact with questions has been invaluable.

“Because of the help we received from the NNA in setting up how we mail the newspapers, we can count on the US Postal Service to deliver the newspapers in a timely manner- and if that doesn’t happen, they are there to find out what went wrong,” explained Julie Maglio.

“This service is essential to every community newspaper that depends on mail delivery.”

Hernando County was an early test case for consolidating the Business Mail Entry Unit (BMEU) and moving it to Tampa. As the only mailing periodical newspaper in Hernando County, the Hernando Sun had to figure out solutions to a number of challenges.

Julie appreciated the support she received from the NNA and looks forward to giving back by being a member of the foundation’s board. The NNA Foundation now runs the Max Heath Postal Institute which was created in memoriam of Max Heath.

In addition to serving on the NNA Foundation board, Julie also serves on the Florida Press Association’s Newspapers in Education board called Florida Press Education Services (FPES). This non-profit works to assist newspapers in creating programs that provide newspapers to teachers and students as well as educational support materials.

The Hernando Sun has grown substantially since starting in 2015. Currently, the Hernando Sun is printing over 4000 newspapers a week and according to Cloudflare statistics, our website had 174.4k unique visitors last month.

Julie is supported by a team of dedicated contributors at the Hernando Sun. Her passion to produce the best newspaper possible each week is an inspiration. As she is involved in all aspects of the newspaper it is often difficult to get a hold of her.

The newspaper has been printing weekly for over six years and has printed well over three hundred newspaper issues. The first year we only printed monthly and that was a struggle as we learned about the newspaper industry.

Julie brought in contributors with significant newspaper experience and reached out to experts in the field. Over the past seven-plus years Julie has earned the equivalent of a “Ph.D.” in “Newspapering.” With this knowledge acquired through mistakes and successes, she hopes to support others who decide to start newspapers.
