On Wednesday, May 17, 2023, around 11:30 pm, Hernando County Sheriff’s office received a call about a verbal altercation at a residence on Our Road and deputies were dispatched.cThis was the second call that night regarding the residence. Earlier that evening at around 9 p.m., deputies had responded to a domestic disturbance at the same address, but the parties involved had already left the scene when deputies arrived. The parties that remained on the scene provided conflicting statements. Deputies wrote an incident report and left the scene.

As deputies were en route another 911 call was made from the residence regarding someone being shot. Deputies rushed to the scene and fire rescue was dispatched. When deputies arrived at the residence for the second time, they learned that two adult males had gotten into a verbal altercation. These men lived in different structures on the property. The altercation became physical and one of the males retreated into his residence. A few moments later that male exited his residence and shot the other male.

The victim had at least one gunshot wound and was airlifted to a local trauma center. The male victim’s name was withheld due to Marsy’s Law. The victim was listed in extremely critical condition.

The suspected shooter, identified as Troy Allen Montgomery, was treated for injuries (possibly from the physical altercation) and placed under arrest. He refused an interview with detectives. Montgomery is currently being charged with attempted murder.

During the search, detectives found various pieces of physical evidence, including a firearm and spent shell casings. All these items were processed by forensics and collected.

Montgomery, who was charged with Attempted Murder, was issued a bond of $50,000. He has since bonded out of jail and is scheduled to return to court in mid-June. The shooting victim remains hospitalized, but his prognosis has improved, he is expected to recover from the injuries.
