Hernando County’s lifelong learning series, Academia Hernando, will feature an engaging presentation by Dee Collier on Friday, Feb. 7, at 10 a.m., as the next installment in its Spring Lecture Series, “Make History Come Alive.”
Collier, a former elementary school teacher with a passion for drama and history, brings historical figures to life with dynamic storytelling and authentic costumes. Her dual presentation will feature the inspiring stories of Corrie ten Boom and Florence Nightingale, showcasing their extraordinary lives and contributions to the world.
Corrie Ten Boom, the first female watchmaker in Europe, is celebrated for her heroism during World War II. Along with her family, she helped hide more than 700 Jews and Jewish sympathizers from the Nazis. Despite being captured and sent to a concentration camp where her sister Betsy died, Corrie survived and traveled the world, sharing her message of faith, forgiveness, and resilience. Collier will portray Corrie in full costume, recounting her life and experiences as if it were 1979. Following the presentation, “Corrie” will remain in character to answer audience questions.
The second half of the lecture will transport attendees to the 19th century, as Collier takes on the role of Florence Nightingale, the pioneering nurse who revolutionized healthcare practices. Nightingale’s dedication to hygiene and patient care transformed the medical field, reducing death rates and laying the foundation for modern nursing. Collier will present her story as Florence Nightingale in 1895, answering questions in character and bringing to life the challenges and triumphs of the era.
