‘What could be more fun than books and food?’ reads the flyer announcing the Hernando County Public Library's 4th Annual Edible Book Contest, held at the Spring Hill Drive branch on Saturday, March 18th.
Entries ran the gamut from classics to soon to publish. Elizabeth Chase used Peeps to show dozens of ways To Kill a Mockingbird. The cake created by Katina Hago Saenz depicted Harry Potter & The Chamber of Sweet Treats and her brother, Tadi Hago Saenz presented a cake named Exoplanet from the Big Book of Space. Madison Lue’s cake represented 21 Balloons and Dina Hicks’s cake showed a scene from Eat Your Words.
Suzanne Abbott brought a carrot cake with a realistic looking, but totally edible, roll of toilet paper on top to promote her book, The Toilet Paper Wars, which is coming out soon. Robin Bravard presented a delicious concoction for “Quoth the Raven, Have S’More”. Susan Cataldo brought the Double Fudge Brownie Murder. Donna Snapp brought Madame Butterfly and The Grapes of Rats. Drue Tulip-Valerio brought a Florida style The Girl in the Castle with a chocolate mermaid and Jessica, Keryn, Katie, Alyssa and Vanessa Vastano brought a cake that looked like a tall stack of pancakes with a syrup bottle suspended several inches over the top to depict If You Give a Pig a Pancake.
Visitors and participants enjoyed tasting all the edible books and most entries were winners. The People’s Choice Award went to the Vastanos – Jessica, Keryn, Katie, Alyssa & Vanessa for their dramatic syrup bottle suspended over a stack of pancakes. Delicious and fun.
