Summer in Hernando County, Camps and Activities

Summer is fast approaching, means the kids will be out of school and have lots of time to fill.  We’ve put together a list of some known programs throughout the county. Not sure is summer camps is a right choice?  Check out these ten big ways camp can improve your child’s life, provided by state camping program coordinator for Florida 4-H, youth development program of the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences Extension:

 

 

1. They’ll dare to try something new.

2. They’ll learn to unplug.

4. They’ll learn to live with roommates.

5. They’ll practice empathy.

6. They’ll get in touch with nature.

7. They’ll learn independence and responsibility.

Local Summer Camps

 

  • Wider Horizons School in Spring Hill offers educational summer programs for children preschool through high school.  You can check out their options at widerhorizonsschool.com/summer or call 352-686-1934.

 

  • Florida 4-H program and camping opportunities, contact your local UF/IFAS Extension office or go to SolutionsForYourLife.com, to learn more.

 

 

 

 

  • Discover Point is now accepting enrollment for the summer camp  Wild Ride.  They have 2 locations in spring Hill, and 2 in New Port Richey.   • Saint Leo University is offering a summer program for kids 15-18, which runs from June 24-29..  The focus is on CSI Crime Scene Investigation, and is a hands on camp, which allows the student to also see what it’s like to live on campus.   • Chinsegut Conservation Center, offers all sorts of fun activities throughout the year. They are offering a Saltwater Fishing Camp, Kayak Adventures, Marine Science, in June and July. Check their website for dates, times, and registration: http://myfwc.com/chinsegut/

  • Kids Bowl Free, from April-October kids can get 2 free games of bowling each day.  Sign up at www.kidsbowlfree.com

 

 

Volunteering

 

If you have a student past the summer camp age and they are either considering college in the future or you are just looking for a way yo get them involved during the summer.  Volunteering is the way to go. One of the requirements for the Bright Futures Scholarships is volunteer hours. Summer is the perfect time to get that done. Here is just a brief list of location you high schooler might want to try:

 

  • Public Library

  • SPCA

  • Humane Society

  • Jericho Road

  • Local churches running a VBS program

  • YMCA

  • Oakhill and Brooksville Regional Hospitals
