2015 Early Spring?

Trees started blooming this year mid-January. So far 15 out of 29 days in January had minimum temperatures above the historical average. In December, 20 out 31 days had minimum temperatures exceeding the historical average by a mean of 11.95 degrees. The warmest day in December was Christmas Eve at 82 degrees. In January, we hit 85 F on the 3rd.

According to Farmer's Almanac there is a 50% probability of frost after February 7th. Although the lowest temperature accuweather predicts after February 7th is 36F on February 10th and 11th.

School Board Considers $300K to get Half Cent Sales Tax on the Ballot- Again

Hernando County School Board will be moving forward in their efforts to put a half cent sales tax on the ballot either jointly with another referendum or through a special election. Back in November 2014 the School Board joined with the Board of County Commissioners in the Penny for Projects Sales Tax Referendum which voters rejected.

What is this in Tom Varn Park?

This structure stands in the middle of Tom Varn Park which was once the Brooksville Quarry. According to historian Frasier Mountain, a railroad track once ran to this spot to bring coal from Alabama for the steam boiler that powered a pump used to recycle water from the slush pond. The ponds in Tom Varn Park adjacent to the structure were once the deepest points of the slush pond (15’-20’ deep).

Girls Soccer: Land O' Lakes Defeats Springstead in Region Semifinals

In the Class 3A, Region II girls soccer semifinal, Springstead's Samantha Betters spoiled a potential Land O' Lakes shut out scoring 2 goals in the last 6 minutes of play. Land O' Lakes Victoria Cannata scored 3 in the first half of the game (2 unassisted). A fourth goal was put away by Freshman Sydny Nasello. Hernandosport.com interviewed players after the game. Senior Erin Blackwell stated, “Land O’ Lakes is a quality side. I’d like to see them win it all. I thought we emptied the tanks. I’m very proud of the team. I have no regrets at all.”

Man Makes 106 Fraudulent Purchases, Turns Himself In

On 12-30-14, Joan Heward reported that after checking the balance on her Wells Fargo company checking account, she discovered numerous unauthorized transactions. The
unauthorized transactions totaled over $9,000. All of the transactions appeared to have occurred over the internet and none were authorized by Heward or any other account holder. The debit card used to make each transaction was in Heward’s name.

Girls Soccer: Springstead moves on to Region Semifinal

Springstead beat Pasco 4-0 to advance to the Class 3-A Region II Semifinals which will be played today, January 27th. Pasco held Springstead until later in the first half when Junior star forward Samantha Betters scored. Soon after, Erin Blackwell set up a goal for Kimberly Gibson. Betters scored twice more in the second half for the hat-trick. Erica Hiller assisted on Better's second goal.
