Setting up for the Count Down

Photography by Alice Mary Herden

Back in 2001 Jennifer Mclaren first stepped out the Palace Grand as a new bride. Fourteen years later she is now the Business Manager.

Inside you are greeted with a huge buffet. The dining area tables are filled with party hats and assorted party favors. Hundreds of balloons are netted and awaiting for the stroke of midnight to drop from the ceiling. “We have the largest and best selling New Year’s Eve party in all three counties,” Mclaren said.

On 12-29-15 at approximately 9 a.m., Hernando County deputies were dispatched to the area of U.S. 19 in front of the Motel 6 regarding a Suspicious Incident.

Dispatchers received a call from a concerned motorist who had observed five very small children attempting to cross the highway to get to Weeki Wachee Springs. The motorist was able to stop the children before they entered into the lanes of traffic.

The children were too young to advise their names and/or who their parents were. All of the children were wearing only diapers, which were heavily soiled.

BROOKSVILLE - Colonel George C. Martin was law partner of William Sherman Jennings. Martin served as the campaign manager for his Jennings' campaign for governor. The campaign was successful and Jennings was Florida's 18th Governor from 1901-1905.

Martin was a well known Brooksville attorney and his legal arguments were legendary. In a memoir entitled Twenty Four Year In the Woods, On the Waters and in the Cities of Florida by Judge Harry A. Peeples from 1906, there are several stories about Martin. One of these stories that is particularly fantastic is included.

Springstead’s Barker back for more

Last season, Tommy Barker received his first taste of the state wrestling meet. Only a few weeks into a new campaign, the Springstead sophomore hungers for a larger bite. Over his team’s first two tournaments, Barker has compiled a 12-0 mark with seven pins. Two Saturdays ago, he was the county’s lone champion at the 34th annual Kiwanis Invitational held at Hernando High.

Hernando’s Wilson Reaching Star Status

Joel Wilson, HHS

Perhaps the most poignant evaluation of Joel Wilson this boys' basketball season came from an opposing coach who had to deal with him. Even though Nature Coast edged Wilson’s Hernando High team on Dec. 11, 50-47, Sharks head coach Dave Pisarcik had nothing but praise for the Leopard guard who had just dropped a game-high 26 points.

“He’s the best player in the district,” Pisarcik said. “To be able to grind one out at home, when we were facing some adversity, shots weren’t falling and Joel was creating a lot of tough situations for us defensively. He’s just a tough guard.”
