Last season, Hernando Christian Academy’s girls basketball team put together its finest campaign, reaching the Elite Eight for the first time in team history.
Could the Lady Lions possibly piece together an encore performance? So far, they certainly have. HCA is enjoying a three-week holiday break, sitting at a perfect 12-0.

BROOKSVILLE – Nature Coast’s boys basketball team received some shiny new toys this Christmas, a couple of holiday tournament championship trophies.
After winning last week’s Hernando Holiday Classic, the Sharks kept their undefeated season alive and won their own tournament for the first time in the process on Thursday night, defeating Tampa-Alonso, 52-34.

Lessons learned from the Podesta email hack

Rocco Maglio, Certified Information Systems Security Professional, CISSP, has over 20 years in the field of software engineering.

The hacking of Clinton Campaign Chairman John Podesta’s email provided a lesson for us all. It was an amazingly simple phishing email that caused his password to be revealed. An email was sent to Podesta’s gmail account saying someone had used his password to login to his account from the Ukraine and he should change his password. It included a link to change the password.

Planting trees in your landscape

by Dr. William Lester, UF/IFAS Extension Hernando County and
Patricia Cooke, UF/IFAS Extension Hernando County Master Gardener

New trees are a long-term investment. They form the framework for your landscape. Hernando County is in USDA’s hardiness zone 9. Choose varieties of Florida Friendly or native plants that are suited to grow in west central Florida. Ask questions and read plant labels. UF/IFAS has a central Florida tree list with links for details about a number of varieties and site selection criteria. Go to: http://hort.ifas.ufl.edu/treesandpowerlines/central_florida.shtml.

FIDDLER ON THE ROOF

FIDDLER ON THE ROOF

For months you have been reading articles I’ve written about different plays in the community, but what is it really like to be part of the cast? Well recently I was given the opportunity to audition for Fiddler on the Roof and even though I don’t have the best singing voice, I was awarded a part of the chorus. It’s been 16 years since I’ve been on stage and even though some things have changed, mainly technology, most has stayed the same. Being a part of community theatre is demanding, and you don’t get paid, but it is an amazing experience. It’s exhausting, nerve-wracking and fun.

Don’t move firewood

UF/IFAS Extension offices and master gardeners frequently receive questions from homeowners about the health and viability of their lawn and landscape plants. By far, the most valuable, long-term investments in the landscape are trees. They provide structure, shade and shelter. Mature trees add resale value to a property too. It is worth taking time to maintain them with proper care.

times building

In August of 2015, the Hernando County BOCC agreed to purchase the Tampa Bay Times building on Highway 50 for $4.15 million to consolidate the Utilities Department offices. In the December 13, 2016 BOCC meeting a request was brought by Budget Manager Pamela Lee for $116,505 to perform a partial roof replacement of the building. The roof replacement is in addition to the $140K in Air Conditioning Repairs that were approved at the May 24, 2016 meeting.

Advice on personal identifications and passwords

One of the most difficult aspects of security is uniquely identifying a user and verifying that they are who they claim to be. This is normally down through a username and password. The username uniquely identifies the user and the password verifies that they are that user.

New law lets government fight propaganda with propaganda

After this year’s election, a topic which has seen a lot of coverage is “fake news.” There were some stories that were shared that sounded plausible to some, but were not true. There was other information that was provided that was true, but may have been obtained by foreign powers.

Some in Congress reacted to this and thus we have the Portman-Murphy Counter-Propaganda Bill. The new law was built into the enormous $611 billion defense appropriations bill signed into law by President Obama on December 23, 2016.
