Sports notebook: County wrestlers advance to states

A week after both collected district championships, both Hernando and Springstead’s wrestling teams had to tangle with state title contenders in Friday and Saturday’s regional meets.
With that in mind, each squad had to be satisfied with its performance and all four Hernando County programs will have some representation at the FHSAA Finals next weekend at Kissimmee’s Silver Spurs Arena.

PALATKA – As his players filed out of a postgame locker room one last time, Nature Coast boys basketball head coach Dave Pisarcik made it clear he saw this season as a success.
There was no shame in what the Sharks had accomplished, going undefeated in the regular season and advancing to the Elite Eight for the fifth time in eight seasons.

County contract with Hernando Beach Volunteer Fire Department terminated

On February 14th, Hernando County Board of County Commissioners agreed to terminate their agreement with Hernando Beach Volunteer Fire Department that had started on June 10th 2014. The termination came after substantial amounts of evidence of mismanagement surfaced. Given Hernando Beach’s location, relative to all of Hernando County, it proved difficult early on to provide services like fire and police to that area; and as a result, a volunteer fire department was created.

ALDI Grocery Store Grand Opening and Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony

On Thursday, March 16, 2017 at 8:25 a.m. ALDI Grocery Store will have their Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony and Official Grand Opening. Following the ceremony, customers can tour the store and enter an on-site sweepstakes for a chance to win a year’s supply of ALDI produce. There will also be an Eco-Bag Distribution.

ALDI Grocery Store recently made news for increasing their selection of organic and all natural products. The offer a smaller selection than large supermarkets, but some of their store brands are discounted.

10 Hernando County students make All-State Ensembles

(STAFF) Ten students in the Hernando County School District were selected to perform with the Florida All-State Ensembles in choir and band.

Chorus teacher and director at Powell Middle School Dave Pletincks explained the rigorous statewide audition process. At the band level they go to a location where they record auditions. There is a sight reading audition and scales audition. Each student audition is loaded online and judges go through them to determine the best ones.

Some ensembles and honor bands are selected through recommendations.

Dredging boat access to Hunters Lake

(STAFF) Tussocks, or floating vegetation, has been a problem in Hunters Lake for years. The county has funded 14 acres of tussock removal in the lake ($150,000) and received funding from FWC for an additional 5 acres. Boat access to the lake has been limited by sedimentation.

The county has determined that they are unable to use Environmentally Sensitive Lands funding to complete the sedimentation removal. The canal is to be hydrologically dredged (1632 feet in length) to a width of 20 feet and an elevation of 11.5 feet.

Funding to replace Bayport Pier

(STAFF) Commissioners voted on Tues. Jan 14th to complete an overhaul of the Bayport Pier which sustained quite a bit of damage during Hurricane Hermine and has been closed since then. They will remove the entire dock, except piles and throw away. Then re-construct the dock back onto existing piles. The project includes providing new cap, frame, stringers, decking, handrail and x-bracing each bent. The cost will run from $71k - $78k total. The funding will come from the Environmentally Sensitive Lands (ESL) funds. Permitting will take at least 10 months.
