2019 Year in Review

From a news perspective 2019 started off with a bang, on Jan. 29 the Hernando County Administrator Len Sossamon was let go. The county administrator is the executive branch of the county government, but he serves at the pleasure of the county commission who is the legislative branch. Len had served as county administrator since 2012. Deputy County Administrator Jeff Rogers was selected as the interim County Administrator. On May 14th, the county commission made Jeff Rogers the County Administrator

HCSO: Juveniles Nabbed After Stealing, Crashing Stolen Vehicle from Southern Hills

On 12-25-2019, four juveniles, who were court-ordered to stay in a group home in Brooksville over the Christmas holiday, decided to sneak out during the early morning hours.

The four juveniles, all males from Hillsborough County, traveled on foot down Powell Road, and then north on Broad Street until they reached the entrance to the Southern Hills community.

Once inside Southern Hills, which is gated, the juveniles started pulling on the handles of numerous vehicles, attempting to gain entry into unlocked vehicles.

HCSO Investigates Christmas Eve Shooting/Stolen Vehicle Incident in Brooksville

On 12-24-2019 at 5:02 a.m., Hernando County sheriff’s deputies responded to the area of Cedar Avenue in the city of Brooksville regarding a report of a possible carjacking.

A homeowner in the area advised being awakened by the sound of gunshots between 4:30 and 4:45 a.m. He then heard his front door open and water running in the bathroom.

The witness told deputies he entered the bathroom where he discovered his son’s friend bleeding from the face. The friend had been staying at the residence with his son prior to the incident.
