Update #2

On December 14, 2020, the barricaded subject has surrendered peacefully to deputies.

The duration of this incident was approximately 6.5 hours.

We are thankful for another peaceful resolution and for the professionalism, compassion, and tactical wherewithal demonstrated by the men and women of the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office who were assigned to this scene.

Thank you for your patience.

Update #1

The status of the Barricaded Subject on Callaghan Avenue remains the same.

The Hernando County Sheriff’s SWAT and Crisis Response Teams are both on scene.

Attempts to establish dialogue with the barricaded subject have continued throughout the evening.  All such attempts are being met with negative results.  As always, our goal is to bring this situation to a peaceful resolution.

The roadways in the immediate area of the residence will remain closed until the situation has been resolved.

Again, residents who have not evacuated are requested to remain indoors.  Thank you.

Original Information – 12-13-20

On 12-13-20 just before 6 p.m., Hernando County Sheriff’s deputies were called to a residence on Callaghan Avenue in Spring Hill regarding a domestic disturbance.

The person who contacted law enforcement told dispatchers that a middle-aged male and his elderly mother had engaged in a verbal dispute inside the residence.  During the dispute, the male battered his elderly mother.

Upon arrival on scene, deputies attempted to take the male into custody, at which time he fled back into the residence; barricading himself inside.

Deputies removed the elderly female from the scene; relocating her to a site where she could be treated by paramedics from Hernando County Fire and Emergency Services.

Meanwhile, other deputies immediately began attempting to establish contact with the male.  Deputies have continually attempted communication for the last three hours.  Communication attempts have been met with negative results.

The male is known to possess several firearms; therefore deputies have not made entry into the residence.

Residents who live in close proximity to the residence in question have either been evacuated or have chosen to shelter in place.

The scene is very active and the situation is very fluid.  There are numerous emergency vehicles in and around the area.

Please avoid this area until further notice.
