Nine officers of the former Brooksville Police Department (BPD) were sworn in as Hernando County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) deputies on June 1, 2018.

Following the placement of the flags by the Honor Guard, and invocation by Reverend Frank Prestigiacomo, Sheriff Al Nienhuis began the ceremony by welcoming the deputies and their families and friends to the HCSO family.  “Law enforcement is a family … and I encourage that we do become family with the new people coming in.”  Nienhuis spoke to the deputies’ friends and relatives about difficulties law enforcement officers face, and the importance of everyone’s support of the deputy in their family.

Giving a brief overview of the orientation later imparted to the deputies, Nienhuis began with a focus on the citizens that the new deputies will serve.  “It’s so critically important for us to leave a good impression with the citizens.”   He ended his address to the deputies by wishing success to each.

Nienhuis then administered the Oath of Office, beginning the ceremony led by Major James Powers. A member of each family then pinned each deputy’s badge to their uniform as photos and video of the historic event were taken by family, friends and the attending media.

New Deputies:
Deputy Joshua Caldwell
Deputy Shane Derryberry
Deputy Scott Fredricksen
Deputy Jacob Gaustad
Deputy Jeff McDougal
Deputy Randal Orman
Deputy Joel Rodriguez
Deputy Edward Serrano
Deputy Alan Whitacre

 Oath of Honor:

I do solemnly swear or affirm that I will support, protect and defend the Constitution and government of the United States and of the state of Florida.  That I am duly qualified to hold office under the constitution of the state, and that I will well and faithfully perform the duties of Hernando County Deputy Sheriff of which I am about to enter.
