Winter break time of the regular season for prep girls basketball in the state of Florida was in full swing last week and we here at the Hernando Sun want to give you the Hernando County reader all the insight you can get during the 2018-2019 campaign. We now take a look at the Hernando Sun Top 5 Prep Girls Basketball Poll for week 5 of the season.

No. 1 Weeki Wachee (12-0, 7-0): The Hornets just keep churning victories out as they head into the New Year’s and don’t show any signs of slowing down. Weeki Wachee now aims to go undefeated in its first tournament of the season when they open up against New Port Richey Gulf in the Hernando Holiday Classic.

No. 2 Hernando Christian (8-1, 4-0): The Lions have quietly had one of the better seasons of any Hernando County team and winning 15 or more games continues to be on the agenda for Hernando Christian. Being the only private school in these rankings, Hernando Christian has put together one of the better small school programs in the North Suncoast region.

No. 3 Hernando (5-4, 2-2): A new start, new year may be exactly what the Leopards need after staring off 4-2 but then slipping to 1-2 in its past three contests. The Leopards are one of Hernando County’s more talented teams but the winter break hasn’t done them any good, including in the loss column.

No. 4 Nature Coast (4-5, 3-1): This Nature Coast group has bounced back nicely after a rough go of it the first several weeks. Recently the Sharks have won three out of their last five games, including victories over Inverness Citrus, Holiday Anclote and rival Central. The Sharks have a chance to get over the .500 mark for the first time this season early on in January.

No. 5 Springstead (2-9, 0-2): Expectations weren’t exactly high going into this season for the Eagles and it looks like they’ll remain low as Springstead has struggled mightily through its first 11 games. A surprising victory over Nature Coast recently has the group playing a bit better as of late.
