Central's John Carbone has a passion for cross country. He started running competitively in the 6th grade running track. Now he runs cross country for the Central Bears. Coaches Jeremy Woolcock and Patricia Greenwood helped Carbone improve his running performance. They stated he has the heart to run and all they had to do was give him a few tips and tricks and he was off.

The Cross Country Regional 5K Meet was held on November 6, 2020; hosted by Weeki Wachee at Sand Hill Boy Scout Reservation in Spring Hill, FL. Carbone placed fifth in this meet and ran undefeated in Hernando and Citrus counties during the regular season. Now, he will compete in the State Championship that’s being held on November 13, in Tallahassee. John is the only one from both Hernando and Citrus counties going to the state meet.

Hernando Sun’s Cheryl Clanton asked John and the other runners why they run and their answer was simple; they love it.

Over the summer John was training by running 40-50 miles a week, and a few times he ran as much as 60 miles per week. As a pre-game ritual, he does a 15-minute warm-up followed by 7-10 dynamic drills and a few strides/accelerations. Then after that, it’s game time.

He offers advice for beginning runners saying, “Your mindset during training will depend on how you race. If you train poorly you can’t expect to compete well.” When he is running he keeps his mind on beating his competition and focuses how far he can push himself.  “Godspeed” to John at the state championship meet!
