Notes from the Museums – When Details Mattered

The May-Stringer Museum has so many interesting items to look at that some details are easy to overlook. The children’s clothing displayed on the second floor is a case in point.

The christening gown and bonnet in the glass case in the hallway is embroidered with flowers and designs to perfection. The shirring at the bodice is lovely. This treasure is over 100 years old and in excellent condition thanks to a family storing it carefully.

The clothing displayed in the children’s bedroom has a delicate look to it, so it isn’t ‘everyday’ apparel. Again, the details are impressive. We don’t often see decorative pleats, ribbons, and embroidery on today’s apparel when polo shirts are the accepted fashion.

When you are touring the Museum, take a second to admire the handiwork and fine machine created clothing.
