Council members serve as liaisons between the Council and various boards or committees. On Aug. 17, 2020, Vice Mayor Pat Brayton introduced a resolution that was recommended by Hernando Community Coalition.

Tobacco and tobacco products, including those used in vaping, are used by adults and youth in various areas of the City. The health risks associated with tobacco and tobacco products are well-documented.

According to the resolution, 21.4% of Hernando County’s youth (those between the ages of 11-17) are using these products. In 2018, the Florida Health Department reported that the number was 19.1%.

Hernando County Coalition member Tresa Watson said the issue is not just smoking or vaping. Health risks are a factor, but they are also concerned with the proper disposal of waste from cigarettes or empty e-cigarette products.

The resolution is to notify Brooksville’s citizens and visitors about the dangers of tobacco and e-cigarette products. It discourages the use of both tobacco and tobacco products in all areas of the City, but particularly in parks and facilities.

Brayton made the motion to accept and approve the resolution. Council Member Bill Kemerer seconded the motion. It was approved unanimously.
