Deputy Injured During Training

On 09-25-19 just after 10 a.m., during a training exercise, a deputy was injured.

During the training exercise, a law enforcement deputy accidentally discharged his weapon during the “un-holstering” process. The deputy sustained a gunshot wound to the leg as a result of the accidental discharge. No other persons were injured.

Fire Rescue was requested, and other deputies on the scene immediately began administering first aid to the injured deputy. It should be noted the injured deputy was alert and talking immediately following the injury.

It's Happened Again a School Resource Deputy Saves Choking Student

On 09-20-19 at 11:40 a.m., Deputy Glen Hickey, a School Resource Officer at Central High School, was notified of a 16-year-old student who was choking in a nearby classroom.

When Deputy Hickey arrived, he found the student sitting in a desk being tended to by the school nurse and a teacher.

Hickey observed the student struggling to breathe and starting to lose color in the face.

The teacher advised the student was possibly choking on a piece of chocolate.

Students charged with firearm possession on school property

At a press conference held on Sept. 6, 2019, HCSO Sheriff Al Nienhuis, together with School Superintendent John Stratton and Major Crimes Detectives had additional information on the series of events that led to the lockdown of several schools on Sept. 5, 2019.

No students were threatened, and no shots were fired during the incident.

All 5 male suspects are juveniles, and students at Hernando High School.  

Detectives Investigating Domestic Violence - Murder Suicide

On 08-31-19 just after 6 a.m., Hernando County deputies were dispatched to a residence in Weeki Wachee (Glen Lakes) regarding a Home Invasion.

A person inside the residence called 9-1-1 to summon help. The caller told the 9-1-1 operator that someone had made entry into the home and that shots were being fired. The caller and at least one other person hid in a closet throughout the incident and until the arrival of law enforcement.

Upon arrival, deputies observed broken glass at the front door. Deputies quickly made a tactical entry into the residence.

Serial dollar store armed robbery suspect apprehended

The Hernando County Sheriff's Office was recently able identify the man responsible for committing three armed robberies earlier this year in Hernando County.

Kevin Bellendorf, W/M DOB/12-19-1971, was arrested on 08-08-19 by the Sumter County Sheriff's Office following an investigation into two recent armed robberies that occurred in Sumter County.

He was taken into custody without incident at a home in Lake Panasoffkee by the Sumter County Sheriff's Office.
