Melissa Fordyce is one of our earliest staff members. She joined The Hernando Sun in 2015, covering local events and interesting places to visit. Melissa has been writing poetry and short stories since the age of 13.
A mom to four boys ranging in age from 22 to 8, her life is very busy, but she manages motherhood, a 16-year career processing insurance claims, homeschooling one of her boys and writing for the paper.
Shortly after Melissa started writing for the paper, she began running paper deliveries to the retail stores where the newspapers are sold. She also compiles the obituary notices each week.
Melissa, and her husband Steven, are both native Floridians from St. Petersburg. They’ve lived in Hernando County now for about 5 and a half years. They enjoy the outdoor activities the area offers like Weeki Wachee Springs and the mermaid show. The bike trail along the Suncoast is also one of their favorites. The family is involved in 4-H rifle shooting as well.
Melissa has covered interesting places to camp in Florida for the newspaper and also wrote an article offering first-hand advice on what to consider when purchasing a camper. Some of the locales where Melissa and her family have camped include Disney’s Fort Wilderness, St. Augustine, Jelly Stone in Madison and Big Pine Key.
Recently, Melissa has covered health-related topics, prompted by her search for natural ADHD treatment options for one of her sons as many of the medications today to treat ADHD, dyslexia and ODHD have negative side effects.
Melissa enjoys writing for the paper because she is able to cover a variety of topics and learn in the process.
Her 16-year-old son also has a talent for writing. He recently won the local and district Patriot Pen essay contest through the VFW and went on to the State level competition.
When asked if she has any advice for moms of multiple boys, she said, “Have Patience and be okay with not getting anything done for yourself.”
The Hernando Sun is glad that Melissa has been able to find time in her busy life for us!
