Reg and Elaine Williams were married shortly after Elaine graduated from high school in 1944.
Surrounded by their three sons, daughters-in-law and other family members, the couple celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary on Saturday, Sept. 7, 2019.
Mr. Williams served in the Army Infantry division, and the two married while he was home on leave. Shortly afterward, he rejoined his fellow service members in the Battle of the Bulge during World War II.
All smiles as they recalled the highlights of their long marriage, Elaine laughed and said, “Our first car had a rumble seat. Do you know what that is?” I did not, and she explained that it was a seat that opened from the trunk of the car.
Reg said, “We worked together, we played together…” The two met during high school at a roller skating rink in Maine. They continued to skate together in adulthood, and later began downhill skiing after their children were grown. The couple worked together at the businesses they built which included a telephone answering service, a television satellite provider, and a Morrow’s Nut House franchise.
Neither had a specific secret to their long lived happiness, but Elaine summarized, “Consideration. Love comes first. Patience, and being able to see each other’s point of view.”
