Focus on the Flowers

In times of crisis, we often find strength as a nation. Neighbors helping neighbors. We do what we can, and we focus on what we can do to help others. We may go shopping for friends who are scared to go out.

Currently, we are too focused on what others are doing or not doing. The college spring breakers are ignoring social distancing. That person is touching their face. Why are you going to the park? We are focusing on the wrong things. We are focused on finding blame with everyone. We are all aghast. We seem to be growing apart rather than coming together.

We need to focus on people who are helping others in this time of need. Businesses which are reinventing themselves to serve the public. Restaurants have remade their menu and are offering takeout friendly dishes. The schools are switching to online education in just a few weeks. Usually, a roll out of new technology takes months if not years. Nurses, doctors and hospitals are spending time and money preparing.

Some of us are shopping for our neighbors. We are doing the little things that make the world better. Many businesses are paying their employees even though they cannot work.

We need to find the flowers. Flowers are the good things that are happening. People are calling to find food pantries that need volunteers. They are working long hours to reinvent businesses so they can provide services while reducing the chance of transmissions of COVID-19.

According to the projections the vast majority of us are going to get COVID-19 in the next year. We can take precautions to lessen our exposure, but it is going to require luck to avoid. Rather than focusing on what people are doing wrong, let’s help each other.
