Registeration begins now:  The HCSO Citizens Academy starts on Thursday, March 14

Have you ever wanted to ride along with a deputy, tour the detention center or sit in as an observer during a shift at the emergency operations call center?

Are you possibly considering a job in law enforcement?

Maybe you’re looking for somewhere to volunteer your time.

If you answered yes to any of these questions, then attending the next session of the HCSO Citizens Academy is your next step.

When you graduate the nine-week program you are given an opportunity to do any or all of the above, in addition to volunteering in various capacities at the Sheriff’s Office.

The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office is pleased to announce the new dates for the afternoon and evening sessions of the upcoming HCSO Citizens Academy.

The academy will begin on Thursday, March 14 and will be held each subsequent Thursday from 1 to 4 p.m. or from 6 to 9 p.m., with the final class on May 9.

The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office Citizens Academy gives citizens an insider’s view of the Sheriff’s Office and the criminal justice system.

Throughout the nine-week course, citizens will observe demonstrations by K-9 handlers, receive a tour of the detention center, and learn exciting facts about Forensics, Uniform Patrol, Traffic Unit, Administration, Investigations, Vice & Narcotics, Communications/911, Aviation & Marine Units, Mounted Patrol, and Legal Issues and Perspectives.

New to the program is a chance to experience the HCSO prism. A few lucky attendees will get a chance to go through various interactive scenarios where you must decide in real-time whether a use of force is needed.

Graduates of this course will have the option of riding along with a patrol deputy; observe in the Communications Center, as well as receive a tour of the jail. The Citizens Academy classes are FREE and they are offered to adults 18 years of age or older.

Teenagers, age 16 and 17, who have an interest in law enforcement may attend with an adult.
