Environmental Center is a No Go

by Hernando Sun Staff

During their January 13 meeting, County Commissioners voted unanimously to return $3 million to the state that was to go towards the building of an environmental and tourist center. The BOCC would have matched funds if the project was to come to fruition. Instead, a decision could not be made on where the tourist center would be located: First Blue Pelican Marina in Hernando Beach, then Weeki Wachee Preserve, Weeki Wachee Springs State Park, Adjacent to Hernando Beach water tower, Weeki Wachee Springs, on the east side of Interstate 75 and State Road 50 or finally Hernando Beach water tower site. Each site had its share of problems and many residents voiced their opposition.
