For PHSC Baseball- reunion game is family reunion

Saturday, January 12, 2019-  Pasco Hernando State College (PHSC) held their annual Alumni baseball game at the West Campus in New Port Richey. This yearly event brings past players back to their home field for the opportunity to step on the clay one more time.

“The main thing is to get the Alumni back on campus,” PHSC Athletic Director Stephen Winterling said. “There’s nothing like going back-reliving the good times they had… it’s just a good reunion.”

PHSC Men’s Basketball Head Coach Steps Down

Pasco-Hernando State College (PHSC) recently announced that Steve Winterling will step down as men’s baseball head coach, however will remain as the College’s athletic director. Lyndon Coleman, assistant coach and recruiting coordinator, is promoted to the head coach position.

A native of Jacksonville, Fla., Winterling’s coaching career has spanned nearly 40 years. He started his career at Florida College in Temple Terrace, Fla. where he served three years as the assistant coach to Dave Scott, for whom he played.

The Hernando Sun 2018 All County Baseball Team

It was another stellar season of prep baseball throughout Hernando County, as no team finished with less than 11 wins. From the start of the season back in February all the way to the Class 5A state semifinals, there were plenty of individual performances that could be recognized along the way. We compiled a list of the top baseball players from this past season with the Hernando Sun’s All-Hernando Baseball Team.

Hernando County 2018 prep baseball wrap up

With Nature Coast Technical High School’s 4-1 loss to Jacksonville Bolles in the Class 5A state semifinals, prep baseball finally concludes in Hernando County and caps one of the best seasons the county has seen in recent memory. The Sharks were able to ride the hot arm of pro prospect Jonathan Gates, who is surely going to be drafted by a Major League Baseball team this week in the 2018 MLB Draft. Hernando was able to have another tremendous season under Tim Sims, in which the Leopards finished second in Class 5A, District 7 behind Nature Coast.

On Thursday May 31, 2018 Nature Coast Technical baseball team made it to the 2018 FHSAA 5A State Semi-Finals game #1. Bolles Bulldogs vs Nature Coast Sharks. This time I'm giving you the play by play from my home watching it on live stream. My dogs looked at me kinda weird as I cheered throughout the game. The Hernando Sun congratulates the Sharks for making it to state.

Gates fans 12, Sharks cruise to second round of playoffs

Over the last three seasons in Hernando County, high school baseball has begun a rejuvenation of sorts, and the constant in this equation is the Nature Coast Sharks. Whether it be their ability to hit the ball efficiently or play lockdown defense, the team has dominated their competition, which allowed them to host Taylor High School on Tuesday night in a FHSAA Class 5A, Region II quarterfinal.

This would be a point where someone would say it wasn’t enough and the Sharks lost, right? Wrong, and it involves one main benefactor: Sharks ace J.P. Gates.

Sharks survive brutal 3rd inning en route to another title

In the last three seasons of high school baseball in Hernando County, two teams have stood out: The Nature Coast Sharks and the Hernando High Leopards.

The two schools have managed to scratch and claw their way to meeting up in district play the last two seasons, facing off for the district championship.
And in meeting No. 3, the same result transpired.

The field is groomed for the second game to take place today May 1, 2018 at Nature Coast High School for the District games. Hernando High School and Ridgewood High School will battle it out today for the win. Both teams were waiting patiently to start their game. Hernando will take the field first. Let's Play Ball!!!!

Hernando County District prep baseball preview

With the regular season coming to a close for prep baseball teams throughout Hernando County, many of the teams have real aspirations towards winning a district championship and clinching state postseason berths. Hernando, Nature Coast and Springstead have all been steady contenders in their respective districts, with Central and Weeki Wachee remaining competitive against district opponents. As district tournaments will be underway next week, we take a closer look at each district with projections on who’ll come out on top in the land of prep baseball.

NOTE: Three 2013 Hernando County graduates, Hernando High’s Christian Arroyo (San Francisco Giants) and Brandon Lawson (Tampa Bay Rays), and Springstead’s Brandon Brosher (New York Mets), are currently playing professional baseball, working their way up through the minor leagues within their respective organizations. Hernando Sun will track their progress weekly throughout the next few months.
