HELP donates funds to aid shoreline restoration at Jenkins Creek

The Hernando Environmental Land Protectors (HELP) has raised $2,000 towards the county’s Florida Sea Grant Extension shoreline restoration and enhancement project at Jenkins Creek.

Chuck Morton, president of HELP, presented Brittany Hall-Scharf, the Sea Grant Extension Agent in Hernando County, with a check at the group’s December 2019 meeting. Hall-Scharf was the guest speaker at at HELP’s Jan. 14, 2020 meeting and updated the group on current and future projects, including the ongoing aquaponics system and the upcoming living shorelines project.

One of the first towns settled by the Creek people in Florida, Chucochatti is highly regarded as a historical and cultural landmark for Hernando County and the State of Florida; renowned in particular, according to Jon Yeager, Hernando Historic Preservation Society member and former chairman of their Archaeological Committee, as the place that marked the site of the ethnogenesis from Creek to Seminole (https://www.hernandosun.com/article/council-says-no-archaeological-research-cemetery-property).

HCSO Deputy Rescues Passed Out Driver from Head-On Crash 1/25/20

On 01-25-20 just after 1 a.m., deputies responded to U.S. 41, just south of Lake Lindsay Road in Brooksville, in reference to a head-on collision.

Upon law enforcement’s arrival, one of the vehicles was on fire.

Upon further investigation, deputies learned the driver of the vehicle who caused the crash had yet to exit the burning vehicle.

K-9 Deputy Jason Jernigan immediately headed over to the vehicle, which was now almost fully engulfed in flames. Deputy Jernigan was able to remove the driver, who was passed out behind the wheel, from the burning vehicle.

Audubon Florida Leadership Initiative Academy

Rebecca Moore, a student at Pasco-Hernando State College, recently attended a Florida Gulf Coast Regional Conservation Committee Leadership Initiative Academy, sponsored by Audubon Florida. She was mentored by Tom St. Clair, a Hernando Audubon member. The Academy is one of a kind co-mentoring opportunity for Audubon leaders and college students to network, share, and learn from each other. This intergenerational experience unites Audubon’s leaders with some of the best and brightest college students interested in conservation.

Brooksville Drug Arrest by FHP Troopers

Brooksville, Fla. – While on routine patrol, FHP Troopers conducted a traffic stop on a white 2015 BMW 328i for an expired tag violation along northbound I-75 near the 301 milepost. The driver, later identified as Anh Tuan Nguyen, 37, of Brunswick, Georgia, displayed overtly nervous behavior and Troopers noticed an intense odor of cannabis. FHP K-9 “Titan” was deployed and quickly alerted.
