Hernando County has received an estimated $2,287,000 in grant funds and an estimated $800,000 in Hurricane Housing Recovery Program (HHRP) Funds under the State Housing Initiatives Partnership (SHIP) Program during State Fiscal Years (FY) 2023-2024. Funding for the SHIP Program is based upon the amount of revenue generated through the local doc stamp tax paid on all real estate transactions and the State approved budget through the Florida Housing Finance Corporation (FHFC).

SHIP dollars may be used within Hernando County to fund Down Payment Assistance, Owner-Occupied Rehabilitation, Special Needs Housing, Emergency Repairs, Multi-Family Affordable Housing, Non-Profit Construction, and Disaster Strategies.

The County will make funds available at various times throughout the year for approved strategies and activities outlined in the current Local Housing Assistance Plan.

Hernando County is currently seeking applications for the following programs:

Down Payment Assistance: Applications will be made available beginning October 1, 2024, and will remain available until all funds are exhausted. The down payment assistance strategy provides qualified individuals/families with down payment, closing cost and renovation assistance. Interested buyers must have a pre-approval from a mortgage lender prior to applying for SHIP assistance, applications will not be accepted without a primary mortgage pre-approval.

Owner-occupied Housing Rehabilitation assistance. Applications were made available beginning June 10, 2024, and will remain available until all funds are exhausted. Homes must be homestead, primary residence. Applications will be numbered in the ordered received and assistance will be provided on a first qualified, first served basis with a priority given to very low income and special needs households.

Hurricane Housing Recovery Program rehabilitation assistance for homes damaged as a direct result from Hurricane Idalia. Funding is available for unmet repair needs and the reimbursement of insurance deductibles for flood and homeowner insurance claims for eligible recipients due to Hurricane Idalia. Applications were made available beginning June 10, 2024, and will remain available until all funds are exhausted. The home must be homestead, primary residence. Applications will be numbered in the ordered received and assistance will be provided on a first qualified, first served basis.

Emergency Repair. Applications were made available June 10, 2024, and will remain available until all funds are exhausted. The Emergency Repair program provides funding to qualified homeowners to remove conditions that are an imminent threat to the health and safety of the residents or those facing immediate emergencies to the home including, but not limited to, roof replacement, electrical hazards, failing septic systems, handicap accessibility, and non-functioning HVAC.
