Wax Paper Plates

We haven’t bought paper plates in a long time, months and months.  And since I’ve volunteered to be the dishwasher—not only to break up the monotony of my day but also to be a good retired husband—I have developed a few new eating habits.

New Systems

I finished my bath and saw that the rust-orange towel had molted all over my body.

I was covered with tufts of orange fur. It was not a good look, and it felt worse than it looked. Worse yet, it gave me a taste of what the next two months would be like.

A Night To Remember At The Palace (February 16, 2002) - Neil Diamond Then and Now.

Neil Diamond is truly an American icon, not unlike Elvis Presley, Pat Boone, Rick Nelson, Buddy Holly, Roy Orbison, Neil Sedaka, and Barry Manilow. Diamond et al have been extremely instrumental in building an international library of musical celebration, rare originality, and staying power beyond belief.  I will remember these artists until the day I leave this planet because they are men of my era: the glorious era of rock n’ roll.

Hobby of Receipts

Several years ago, after I came back from a store and was sitting comfortably in my office trying to write but mainly watching recordings of The Big Bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother, and The Flintstones, my wife came in and wanted to know what I had bought.  Her phone had alerted her to the purchases, but it did not name the items.  She wasn’t upset, just nosy.  It was a new app.

Staying focused on our mission

For many years I’ve had the privilege to visit nursing homes as I truly enjoy spending time with the elderly. I sing and teach Bible studies and appreciate hearing about their former lives. The Lord has allowed me to make some precious friendships and I want to share with you about a lovely lady who after a devastating stroke was no longer able to be independent and is now in a comfortable setting where she is well taken care of.

Spring Palm Tree Care

Palm trees in Hernando County frequently look a little rough this time of year. Winter temperatures and weather here are not ideal for palm tree growth, so your palms may have some freeze damage, dead fronds, and not much new, healthy green growth. If you follow a few basic rules for good palm health, you can take steps now to ensure that your palms will be healthy and looking good for many years to come.

“Where the Stars Hang” by J.L. Young

There are days when you want to spend time engrossed with a reliable read, a potboiler, by an author that has proven to deliver. You want to read a space opera where the plot is evenly advanced leaving the reader with a desire to read more at every page but without exhaustion. “Foundation” by Isaac Asimov, “Tau Zero” by Poul Anderson, or “Well of Souls” by Jack Chalker are the types of books and authors who can deliver a reliable read.

Book Review: The Odd Life of No One in Particular

You don’t have to be a rock star or save the planet to find deep meaning and value in living what author, Paul Woodis, calls “the odd life of no one in particular.” In this profoundly detailed life story, we are given a fresh reminder that our personal experiences are significant; we matter. What an important message this is for our time when so many people struggle with feelings of unworthiness and depression, especially when there has been abuse and trauma in childhood.

Jupiter Two Meals

I haven’t bought paper plates and bowls in a long time, but I have sneaked in some plastic flatware.  Of course, it’s no longer a secret after I dump the forks, spoons, and knives in the drawer of the microwave stand, into three sectional containers, but my wife hasn’t complained, so I’m good.  It will be the natural course of things that I’ll start using metal again when I run out of those polystyrene utensils, and do so for many weeks and perhaps months before I find myself down that aisle and once more spot them on the shelves.  We’ve gone long stretch
