Sentencing Information for a Death Investigation at 15013 Old Stage Coach Road

On 09-25-19, the Honorable Judge Stephen Toner sentenced Joshua Daniel Carroll to 24 years in the Department of Corrections, followed by 10 years of probation for the 11/22/17 homicide at 15013 Old Stage Coach Road in Brooksville of Janet J. Carroll W/F DOB 09/04/1985

Joshua Daniel Carroll pleaded guilty on August 14th, 2019 to second-degree murder, not premeditated.in connection with the murder of his wife  

The medical examiner listed the cause of death as traumatic asphyxia.



Deputy Injured During Training

On 09-25-19 just after 10 a.m., during a training exercise, a deputy was injured.

During the training exercise, a law enforcement deputy accidentally discharged his weapon during the “un-holstering” process. The deputy sustained a gunshot wound to the leg as a result of the accidental discharge. No other persons were injured.

Fire Rescue was requested, and other deputies on the scene immediately began administering first aid to the injured deputy. It should be noted the injured deputy was alert and talking immediately following the injury.

It's Happened Again a School Resource Deputy Saves Choking Student

On 09-20-19 at 11:40 a.m., Deputy Glen Hickey, a School Resource Officer at Central High School, was notified of a 16-year-old student who was choking in a nearby classroom.

When Deputy Hickey arrived, he found the student sitting in a desk being tended to by the school nurse and a teacher.

Hickey observed the student struggling to breathe and starting to lose color in the face.

The teacher advised the student was possibly choking on a piece of chocolate.

Detectives Investigating Domestic Violence - Murder Suicide

On 08-31-19 just after 6 a.m., Hernando County deputies were dispatched to a residence in Weeki Wachee (Glen Lakes) regarding a Home Invasion.

A person inside the residence called 9-1-1 to summon help. The caller told the 9-1-1 operator that someone had made entry into the home and that shots were being fired. The caller and at least one other person hid in a closet throughout the incident and until the arrival of law enforcement.

Upon arrival, deputies observed broken glass at the front door. Deputies quickly made a tactical entry into the residence.

Teen Driver Challenge – September-2019

The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office Teen Driver Challenge is a defensive driving and vehicle control program designed for licensed teenage drivers. The program is designed to provide young drivers, age 16, 17, and 18, with the knowledge and understanding of vehicle dynamics and human kinetics, the forces created by an automobile and the effects of those forces on the human body.

The next Teen Driver Challenge is being held on Friday, 09-13-19 from 8 AM to 5 PM at the Pasco Hernando State College East Campus, located at 36727 Blanton Road, Dade City 33523.

HCSO offers 7-hour course on firearms safety

“In Hernando County, there are currently over 21,500 citizens who are permitted to possess concealed weapons via F.S. 790.02. With that being said, it is in the public’s best interest for citizens who are legally armed to also be ‘armed’ with basic knowledge and skills related to possessing firearms. The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office training unit has created a one-day course entitled Situational Awareness Firearms Education.”

Elderly Woman Airlifted After Dog Attack and UPDATE


A Brooksville woman attacked early Monday morning by three pit bulls remains hospitalized at a local trauma center.

The woman, who is not being identified at this time, sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the attack on Church Road.

The owner of the dogs, Ralph Hughes B/M DOB/12-03-63, was cited as follows:

- Public Nuisance Animal – Second Offense (3 counts) -- $900

- Unrestrained Animal (3 counts) -- $1,200.
