Composition activity for High School: (WL.K12.AL.5.3 – Write well-organized essays, summaries, and reports on a broad range of topics including those that have been personally researched using authentic texts.)
Read the editorial page A-8 entitled “A Conversation on Pandora’s Box.” Summarize the editorial in 300 words or more. Be sure to mention why the writer compared current events to the story of Pandora’s Box. Then write an essay of 350 words or more on any of the following Greek myths and explain the meaning behind the myth:
Icarus
Pygmalion
King Midas book

Critical thinking activity for High School: (ELA.9.C.4.1 – Conduct research to answer a question, drawing on multiple reliable and valid sources, and refining the scope of the question to align with findings.)
Read the article on pg. A-1 about the county’s study on tiny homes. Discuss the pros and cons of this concept. You should discuss at least 2 points in favor and 2 points opposed to the idea. Cite two sources other than the article in your essay. Your essay should be at least 400 words. As always, if you quote something directly from any resource be sure it’s not more than one or two sentences and put quotation marks around the sentences. Also note where you got your information (the website address or the name of the article or book.

Math activity for Elementary School (MA.3.AR.1.2 – Solve one- and two-step real-world problems involving any of four operations with whole numbers.)
Study the Calendar of Events on page B2 and answer the following questions:
How many more Christmas-related events are there than events involving food? (If a Christmas event involves food, only count it as a Christmas event.)
What is the total number nature-related events and library events?
Multiply the number of art-related events by the number of nature-related events.
Divide the number of total events by the number of musical events.

Comprehension activity for Elementary School: (ELA.1.R.2.2. – Identify the topic of and relevant details in a text.)
Read the article on page B-1 about the tree lighting event and answer the following questions:
What is the main idea (topic of the article?
Write down 5 important details in the article.
Extra Credit assignment: Summarize the article in your own words using the important details that you listed above. Also write a title for the article that’s different from the one in the paper. Your summary should be at least 300 words.

Comprehension activity for Middle School: (ELA.K12.EE.2.1 – Read and comprehend grade-level complex texts proficiently).
Read the article on page B-1 about the DAR and its beautification project. Answer the following questions:
What do the initials DAR stand for?
Why did the group decide to do this project?
Why does this chapter of the DAR have a special connection to Chinsegut?
What are some goals of the DAR?
Who is eligible to join the DAR?

Extra Credit assignment: Write an essay of 350 words or more about the DAR. Make sure it includes important information such as when and why the organization was founded; who founded it; some famous people that you have heard of who were or are members of the DAR.

Math activity for Elementary School (MA.3.M.1 – Measure attributes of objects and solve problems involving measurement)
Study the following advertisements. Then answer the following questions for each ad.
Loomis Circus ad (pg. A-2), Century 21 ad (pg. A-3), Optimum Health Care ad (pg. A-5), Plaza Mexico ad (pg. B-3).
1. What is the width (side to side) and the length (top to bottom) of the ad?
2. What is the perimeter of the ad? (For perimeter add the length and width of the sides)
3. What is the area of the ad? (For area multiply the length times the width)
4. What is the difference in area between the Century 21 ad and the Loomis Circus ad?
5. What is the difference between the width of the Optimum Health Care ad and the Plaza Mexico ad?
6. What is the difference between the length of the Century 21 ad and the Optimum Health Care ad?
7. What is the difference in the perimeter between the Loomis Circus ad and the Plaza Mexico ad??
