On 05-07-19, during 7th grade lunch period at West Hernando Middle School in Brooksville, Deputy Shane Landgraff was in the cafeteria when he was notified of a student in distress.

Deputy Landgraff, the school’s assigned School Resource Officer, immediately made his way to the student, who when he arrived, appeared to be choking.

He noted the student was holding their neck and chest area.

When the student failed to respond, Deputy Landgraff immediately administered three back blows to the choking student.

The blows caused the student to dislodge the stuck food. Deputy Landgraff then worked to assess the student to ensure the student was stable.

Once the student’s breathing returned to normal, the student was taken to the school nurse for further observation.

The student was able to make a full recovery and returned to class later the same day.
