Notes from the Museums: On the Hill

The May-Stringer Museum sits on top of one of the many hills in Brooksville. Using the altimeter feature on my I-phone, I recently stood in the front yard of 601 Museum Court and learned the property is 200 feet above sea level.
A walk down the hill to where the brook crosses Jefferson Street and the altimeter showed the elevation there is about 150 feet. Then up to the Courthouse shows that the hill is higher at 220 feet.
Continuing down Jefferson to the railroad tracks, the reading is 140 feet. Swinging over to Broad Street, Luigi’s Pizza is at 110 feet.
Chinsegut Hill just five miles north of us is at 269-274 feet, arguably, the second-highest point in the State of Florida. The average elevation in Florida is 100 feet.
So, when visiting the May-Stringer or the other businesses up on the hill, know that you are on very high ground, by Florida standards. Enjoy the fresh air!
