For the first time in campus history, Pasco-Hernando State College in Spring Hill is hosting a multifaceted, multidimensional celebration of the arts created by their own students.

Pasco-Hernando State College Students Got Talent will be celebrated Wednesday, November 9, from 12–7 pm on the Spring Hill Campus, 450 Beverly Court in Spring Hill, in the Rao Musunuru, MD Conference Center. Remarks and a reception will be scheduled at 6 pm. The event will showcase student work from the following courses: Julie Lovero’s Drawing & Painting Course: drawings and paintings, Richard Downing’s Creative Writing Course: poetry, and Eddie Williams’, Ed.D., Human Services Course: student-made brochures and papers on mental health.

“We’ve separately showcased student art, photography, and poetry,” explained Amy Anderson, M.D., provost, Spring Hill Campus. “But this is the first time for showing student art and writing together.”

To Anderson, this event reflects the importance of arts education in the college curriculum. She shared, “As far as inspiration, PHSC values the arts and recognizes the importance it plays in higher learning and we look to incorporate unique ways to engage our talented students and provide them a venue to display their expressions.”

This is a multidisciplinary event; one intended to unite students and encourage their collaboration. “We try to bring students in different disciplines together to enhance their learning and this was a good way to do that,” said Anderson.

Also to this end, administrators at PHSC are encouraging students to work together and inspire one another. “We are encouraging the students in the art classes to create some pieces based on student poetry and encouraging the students in the poetry classes to write on topics represented in the art classes,” said Anderson.

At the Students Got Talent, both arts class teachers and student creators will be on hand to discuss their creative works with the community. “At the event, we’ll have brief remarks from the instructors and a couple of students,” said Anderson. “We’ll have light refreshments throughout the day. Julie Lovero-Fox and Eddie Williams, and some of the students, will be there to discuss their work.”

Some of the works on display will include artistic drawings and paintings, creative writing and designed brochures. “Attendees can look at all of the art and writing,” said Anderson.

In the wake of the event, says Anderson, some of the pieces featured will form a part of an arts exhibit at the library of the Spring Hill campus, located in the Spring Hill Campus Library, Room: C109. “We will display some of the pieces in the library after the event,” said Anderson.

Students Got Talent is a free event, and open to the public. Everyone is encouraged to enjoy the full spectrum of original student art.
