Two-term Commissioner Jeff Holcomb leaves his seat on the Hernando County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) to prepare for his new job in Tallahassee. Commissioner Holcomb was elected on Nov. 8 to serve as Florida’s House Representative for District 53.

Commissioner Holcomb has served as commissioner since his election in 2014. He was recognized at the October 25, 2022 BOCC meeting by his fellow board members.

Chairman Steve Champion stated, “I just know he’s going to do a fantastic job in the House and I’m glad to have him up there representing us.”

Vice Chairman John Allocco remarked, “I enjoyed working with you to get you elected initially. It was one of my first attempts at getting someone I was excited about elected to office. We both got involved with the Republican party pretty close to the same time and worked on different campaigns. I was involved with Herman Cain and you were with Rick Santorum I believe at one point. We were both running campaigns locally against each other, but it was fun.” Allocco said he’s looking forward to being able to talk with Holcomb again outside of the BOCC chambers and working with him when he is a state Representative.

Commissioner Narverud said that it’s been a pleasure watching him grow into the shoes he’s wearing today and she’s enjoyed his dry sense of humor. “It’s watching you being able to get up there and really deliver the speech as well as you do now, you’ve really grown into a great speaker and I’m proud to call you my friend and I know that you’ll do a great job up there. I’m glad we’ll have that open door and have someone up there doing the good work that you do. Thank you for your service, and thank you for your service here in this community. I’m looking forward to another great four years with you.”

Commissioner Wayne Dukes reminisced about the time he and his wife Sylvia met with Holcomb, and donated to his campaign. “And that’s why you got elected,” Dukes ribbed with a chuckle.

Recalling his initial campaign, and everything he has learned during his time in office in Hernando County, Holcomb said, “I’m wired to be a part of this, I think. And looking forward to doing the same thing in Tallahassee of the House of Representatives. To all the citizens in Hernando County, I am truly blessed to have your votes, donations, and support. I want to thank County staff for the working relationship that we’ve had. We’ve been able to deal with a lot of citizen issues because of the great heart and the great work ethic that this county staff has.”

He commended the county leadership, “We have stellar leadership in this county. I have no regrets walking away with how things are going to work in this county. They’re thinking for the future, they’re planning. We’ve fixed departments, we’ve upgraded software systems, we’ve improved our infrastructure, expanded our wastewater treatment plants. We created jobs. We’ve supported our first responders and we’ve improved our parks.”

“Walking away from this board, I am really glad that this board has a great working relationship. At the end of the day, win or lose, we’re working together as a strong team. And with the strong staff we have in this county- I see great things in the future- and great things for the new board… And the knowledge that they will bring.”
