On March 23, 2023, local dignitaries and community members gathered to break ground on three budget-friendly single-family home sites in Hernando County. The homes will be built through the Mid Florida Community Services, Inc. (MFCS) “House to Home” Program on LaBella Street, off California Street in Brooksville. “These sites will soon be home to families and/or individuals who have a demonstrated need for housing and have the financial ability to own a home, even if they would not qualify for a traditional mortgage,” according to a related press release. The homes will represent the organization’s first set of fully completed homes since acquiring the home-building program last year after the dissolution of Habitat for Humanity of Hernando County, Inc.
“In addition to income requirements, eligibility is determined through a process that assesses the applicant’s need for better housing, the applicant’s ability to afford homeownership, and the applicant’s willingness to fulfill requirements related to being a partner of the program.”
Each home will have three bedrooms and will be 1520 square feet.
The House to Home program has more properties on LaBella Street slated for home construction. Richard Sanvenero Sr., House to Home Director, stated that through collaboration with the county and state, they hope to get a larger tract of land for affordable housing construction, as it would be a more efficient way to build. “The main thing here in the county is affordable housing, especially workforce housing,” said Sanvenero.
He said that the permit to completion time on the home construction is about eight to nine months, depending on the availability of materials.
Proceeds from sales at the House to Home Thrift Store go toward funding home construction. The thrift store is located at 19450 Cortez Boulevard in Brooksville.
The application cycle for this batch of homes will open on August 1, 2023, and remain open through October 1, 2023. Applications are not accepted on a rolling, ongoing basis; rather, applications are accepted in cycles that align with the progress of the homes in process.
