A Spring Hill man is being held without bond in connection with the shooting death of his live-in girlfriend.

Hernando County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) Deputy Public Information Officer (PIO) Michael Terry said around 10:40 p.m. on Feb. 28, deputies responded to a report that a shooting had taken place at a residence on St. Ives Boulevard in the Pristine Place community in Spring Hill.

Inside that residence, deputies found a woman who had sustained a fatal gunshot.

Later, the suspect, identified as 61-year-old Roland Maurice Akins, told investigators that he had been engaged in an argument with his live-in girlfriend, whom he was trying to convince to leave his home.

During the argument, the woman was holding a gun. Atkins told investigators that when he took it away from her, it accidentally fired and struck her.
