Happy Mother’s Day
I recall many good years growing up. Mom, how young you are in this photo! How little I am! You worked hard on the farm and here you are taking time to play with me! I recall busy days and quiet nights. We had family dinners together and later everyone watched television. One TV set was all we had back then (with three channels) and it seemed like more than enough. It was a comfortable world and the memory of it today makes me smile.

Motherhood Laughter
I cherish motherhood for all the laughter it brings. When I was very pregnant with our son Max, our 2 year old daughter Hanna disappeared while I was watching her in the living room, but I could hear her breathing since she was a noisy breather. I was standing up and turned around several times searching the room, but could not find where she was hiding. Finally, I looked underneath my large belly and there she was. I wrote down funny moments like this while our children were small and highly recommend parents do this. It’s very entertaining to read as a family and we have lots of stories to embarrass our kids should the need arise.
Happy Mother’s Day, Julie Maglio

On Behalf of the Hernando County School District
On this special Mother’s Day, on behalf of the Hernando County School District, I would like to extend my warmest and most sincere wishes to all the mothers, grandmothers, caregivers, and mother figures within our school community. This day is an opportunity to celebrate the incredible strength, love, and dedication that you bring to your families, and the positive impact you have on the lives of our students.
As educators, we know that the foundation of a child’s growth begins at home, and we are grateful for the unwavering support and guidance that parents and caregivers provide. You nurture not only their minds but also their hearts, fostering the resilience, kindness, and curiosity that are so important for success both in and out of the classroom.
Today, let us honor the many roles you play in our children’s lives—guiding them through challenges, encouraging their dreams, and celebrating their triumphs. The influence of a mother is immeasurable, and we are thankful for the partnership we share in educating the next generation.
Happy Mother’s Day to each of you—may you feel the love and appreciation you so deeply deserve!
Sincerely,
Superintendent
Ray Pinder

Mom is Always Watching
Being a single mother, I knew that I would have to be strict with my son, Ed, so he didn’t take advantage of me. Since he was an only child, as well, I knew it would be a challenge not to spoil him. I wanted to teach him discipline, consequences, and independence.
One of my strategies was to tell him that he couldn’t get away with anything because I would always find out. This was made clear to him when he was in high school.
I came home for lunch one day, which was a rarity for me. We lived off Sunshine Grove Road on a lime rock “no lane” road. There weren’t many houses on the road back then, so what were the odds that I would see my son driving past me in the opposite direction. I knew he was supposed to be in school.
I can’t remember if I stopped and confronted him right then or there or if he saw me. However, that evening I told him I had seen him. Ed was surprised and chagrined, to say the least.
I also told him that I had notified the school to let them know he had skipped school. Ed was quite indignant about that.
“Why’d you have to go and do that, Mom,” he said.
“Because you need to learn the consequences of skipping school,” I replied.
They gave him several days of in-school suspension for that infraction. He never skipped school again (at least not to my knowledge).

“Momma, have you lost it?”
Our mother was the nicest lady, I have ever known. There were times she would give up her dinner to a kid that had none. We would get so upset and ask her “Momma, have you lost it,” she would smile and say, “It’s better to give then receive.” She would also say, “Thank you” and “Please”, once again we didn’t understand what she was instilling in us. Today I find myself doing the things that she has done, so I guess she hadn’t lost it after all. I wonder if my kids thought I had lost it.

Evolution of Mother’s Day
Mother’s Day has evolved so much for me over the years. From a day, I would only somewhat recognize to a day where I hold a deep sense of gratitude.
My journey to motherhood started in the summer of 2018 and unexpectedly ended December 1 of that year. The grief that would follow was overwhelming. I would be fortunate to be pregnant with my rainbow baby by May 2019, but I remember that Mother’s Day hitting me like a ton of bricks; I stayed in bed and cried the whole day. I felt like an invisible mother of sorts.
Mother’s Day, May 2020, I would be holding my healthy little rainbow baby and feeling a tremendous amount of joy but also recognition for so many mothers. Mothers who struggled with fertility or pregnancy, mothers who lost their babies as children or even adults: Mothers who feel invisible for a multitude of reasons.
This Mother’s Day in 2025 I will look at my four children and feel a deep sense of appreciation for the gift of motherhood I have been given. I hope my fellow mothers will also feel that sense of gratitude for their special gift. For the Mothers who are dealing with their own heavy times, I see you, and I hope you are able to get further from it and grow to where it doesn’t feel like the only thing you are carrying.
Much love to all the Mothers.
