From 1890 to about 1940, the candlestick phone was a popular feature in any home or business. It was also known as the stick phone or upright phone. Western Electric and Automatic Electric were among the early producers of the telephone. The early models needed a separate ringer box to hold the capacitor, coils and other necessary equipment.
Visitors to the 1885 Depot Museum are often surprised when they are handed a candlestick phone as part of the guided tour. They lift the receiver (earpiece) off the hook and hear a dial phone. If someone in their party has a cell phone, they can use the stick phone dial to call that phone! It’s another way that the Brooksville museums bring history to life.
