Notes from the Museums: Keepsakes

Alma B. Treiman graduated from Hernando High School in 1942. The scrapbook in which she collected her prized mementos is quite beat up…let’s call it well-worn. The treasures inside, however, are in great condition. With the Hernando County Fair wrapping up this week, it’s worth noting that Alma preserved the many ribbons she collected for entering the various categories of exhibition. It seems she was quite the gardener, as the ribbons from the 1937 fair attest. Alma’s invitation to the Hernando High 1942 graduation ceremony is also preserved.

It’s not always the monetary value of an item that makes it worth keeping. The memory returns to the time spent planting the seeds, cultivating and harvesting the vegetables, and displaying at the fair. And then the excitement of the rides, food and friends at the fair come traipsing back to fond recollections. The value isn’t in cash… it is in the memory of the time spent. Alma Treiman’s scrapbook of memories from some 90 years ago is at the May-Stringer Museum.
