Some Hernando County communities will get a boost in their broadband services thanks to a grant through the Broadband Opportunity Grant Program. The program expands access to broadband internet in underserved communities throughout the State of Florida.

Under the first round of grants, North Brooksville, Spring Lake, Nobleton, South Brooksville, Hill N’ Dale, Istachatta, North Weeki Wachee, and Unincorporated Hernando County will receive $4,701,477 to add 258.5 miles of fiber to the premises (FTTP) via the ethernet passive optical network and connect 2,276 underserved homes and business in the county with a starting speed of up to 300 megabits per second (MBPS) download and 10 MBPS upload.

“Broadband internet access creates jobs and enhances educational opportunities for Floridians,” said Gov. Ron DeSantis during a press event in Milton, Fla., on Feb. 2. “I look forward to continued investments through this program to ensure Florida families have access to important resources no matter where they live.”

In all, more than $144 million included in the first round of awards will benefit 58 projects in 41 counties across the state and affect nearly 160,000 unserved residential, educational, business, and community locations.
