(Weeki Wachee, FL) May 17, 2019 at 5:22 p.m., Hernando County Fire Rescue (HCFR) responded to reports of a residential structure fire at 8259 Darts Street. Neighbors called 911 reporting that smoke and flames were coming from the home. Initial reports also stated that neighbors were not sure if the residents were home. The neighbors began on the doors but response from inside the home was not received.
The first HCFR unit arrived on scene within 7 minutes and found a single-story mobile home with smoke and flames coming from the side of the home. Due to the unknown occupancy status of the home, fire crews made a coordinated attack on the fire and a search for victims. It was determined that there were no occupants in the home. The main body of the fire was located in a bedroom and was then brought under control. Despite the quick fire department response the home did sustain considerable fire damage and is not tenable.
Fire crews are currently on scene performing salvage and overhaul operations. The occupants of the home have arrived on scene, a family of five. The Red Cross has been notified to provide assistance for two adults and three children being displaced by the fire.
The cause of the fire is not yet known. Crews are currently investigating.
HCFR responded with 3 fire engines, 2 rescues and 2 Battalion Chiefs for a total of 14 personnel.
No injuries were reported to citizens or first responders at this incident.
