George Anthony Rubis, 83

George Rubis

George Anthony Rubis, 83, a longtime resident of Brooksville, Fla., passed away while hospitalized there on Aug. 20, 2021.

George was born March 29, 1938, in Johnstown, Pa., and attended public schools in Youngstown, Ohio, where he started private violin lessons and began his lifelong love of classical music. He graduated from Oberlin College in 1960 with a degree in viola performance. During one college year, he studied at the Mozarteum Conservatory in Salzburg, Austria. After college, he won a full scholarship for graduate work at the Manhattan School of Music in New York, where he studied with the principal violist of the New York Philharmonic, conducted at that time by Leonard Bernstein.

Unfortunately, shoulder injuries prevented George from pursuing a full-time performance career. But after moving to Washington, D.C., where his mother and siblings lived, he played occasionally as an extra or substitute with local orchestras, including the Kennedy Center and National Symphony orchestras.

In the 1960s, George began teaching violin and viola lessons to private students, offering lessons at Ellsworth music studio in Silver Spring, Md., and later at his home studio in Bethesda, Md.

For two years, he was strings chairman of the Maryland State Music Teachers Association. During 1977-78, he was strings specialist and assistant conductor of the Masterworks Orchestra of Montgomery County, Md.

George was a highly regarded music teacher, his students often winning prizes in Maryland State Music Teachers Association competitions, and going on to perform with groups such as the National Gallery Orchestra, Washington Ballet and Handel Festival Orchestra.

After meeting his beloved wife Roberta “Bobbi” Lennarz (née Lozensky) of Towson, Md., they married in 1973. They moved to Kensington, Md., where George continued to offer private lessons.

George and Bobbi moved to Brooksville, Fla., in 1980, where he continued to teach privately and at Chocachatti Elementary School in Spring Hill, Fla. While teaching music was his primary occupation, George supported his family over the years with many other jobs and side businesses, including selling life insurance, specialty advertising items, printing, prepaid legal insurance, and multilevel marketing products.

In 2007, George was a co-founder of the Hernando Youth Orchestra, a nonprofit that provides a place for musicians under 21 to play with others and perform in public. George spent many hours helping the players hone their individual skills and assisting in rehearsals and performances.

George and Bobbi were members of the Brooksville Church of Christ. In 2019, they moved into The Grande, an independent and assisted living facility in Brooksville.

George had many friends and acquaintances and will be remembered for his indomitable spirit, sense of humor, devotion to family, love of people, and political passion.

In addition to his wife Bobbi, George is survived by stepsons William Lennarz of New Orleans, Matthew Lennarz of Pittsford, N.Y., and David Lennarz of Williamsburg, Va; brothers Carl Rubis of Daleville, Va., and Leon Rubis of Vienna, Va.; sister Jewel Wooten of Clemmons, N.C.; and many grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and others.

Memorial donations may be made to the Hernando Youth Orchestra, P.O Box 623, Brooksville, FL 34605.
