George Gilbert Schaffer, Sr.

George Gilbert Schaffer, Sr. passed away on March 21, 2024, in Tallahassee, Florida. He was born
on October 9, 1929, in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.

George proudly served his country in the United States Army in Alaska during the Korean War. While stationed in Orlando, he met his future bride, Dorothy Maurine Wilson. They were married
for 72 years.

After they married, the Schaffers moved to Brooksville, Florida, where George became a letter carrier with the U.S. Postal Service. When he retired in 1984, he began selling “bent and dent” groceries at cut-rate prices. Many customers expressed gratitude for his generosity in providing
food for their families.

As a volunteer, George was involved in many activities over the years: Sunday School teacher, volunteer firefighter, Little League coach, domestic violence thrift store, humane society, and Brooksville Regional Hospital. He was a 32nd Degree Mason.

George and Maurine traveled widely around the United States after he retired. He said his trip to Washington D.C. on an Honor Flight was one of the best days of his life.

Those left to survive George are his wife Maurine; daughters Teresa Morris (Jim) and Janice Scholz (Tom); son George Jr. (Rhonda); grandson Jimmy Morris (Beth); granddaughters Tamera Scholz (JP Rabbah) and Kendra Scholz; and great grandson Trace Morris.

George was a gentle and kind man. He was a beloved husband, father and friend and will be greatly missed.

A private service will be held at Tallahassee National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, you may wish to make a donation to the Ronald McDonald House or Brehon Family Services.
