Detectives Investigating Domestic Violence - Murder Suicide

On 08-31-19 just after 6 a.m., Hernando County deputies were dispatched to a residence in Weeki Wachee (Glen Lakes) regarding a Home Invasion.

A person inside the residence called 9-1-1 to summon help. The caller told the 9-1-1 operator that someone had made entry into the home and that shots were being fired. The caller and at least one other person hid in a closet throughout the incident and until the arrival of law enforcement.

Upon arrival, deputies observed broken glass at the front door. Deputies quickly made a tactical entry into the residence.

Serial dollar store armed robbery suspect apprehended

The Hernando County Sheriff's Office was recently able identify the man responsible for committing three armed robberies earlier this year in Hernando County.

Kevin Bellendorf, W/M DOB/12-19-1971, was arrested on 08-08-19 by the Sumter County Sheriff's Office following an investigation into two recent armed robberies that occurred in Sumter County.

He was taken into custody without incident at a home in Lake Panasoffkee by the Sumter County Sheriff's Office.

Teen Driver Challenge – September-2019

The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office Teen Driver Challenge is a defensive driving and vehicle control program designed for licensed teenage drivers. The program is designed to provide young drivers, age 16, 17, and 18, with the knowledge and understanding of vehicle dynamics and human kinetics, the forces created by an automobile and the effects of those forces on the human body.

The next Teen Driver Challenge is being held on Friday, 09-13-19 from 8 AM to 5 PM at the Pasco Hernando State College East Campus, located at 36727 Blanton Road, Dade City 33523.

Deadly Drugs and Stolen Firearm Located by Alert Deputies

In two separate incidents, just hours apart, Hernando County Sheriff’s deputies located and removed numerous deadly drugs and a stolen firearm from the streets of Hernando County.

On 07-15-19 just after 8 p.m., Deputy Matthew LaPalme received information regarding a vehicle stopped/parked in the middle of the roadway near 5057 Bromley Avenue in Spring Hill. The vehicle was reportedly running and had a driver/occupants inside.

Sheriff Introduces New Program – Firearms Training for the Legally Armed Citizen

Sheriff Al Nienhuis is pleased to introduce a new firearms training program, SAFE, exclusively for the legally armed Hernando County citizen.

In Hernando County, there are currently over 21,500 citizens who, are permitted to possess concealed weapons via F.S. 790.02. With that being said, it is in the public’s best interest for citizens who are legally armed to also be “armed” with basic knowledge and skills related to possessing firearms. The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office training unit has created a one-day course entitled Situational Awareness Firearms Education.

Detectives Investigate Drowning in Gulf of Mexico

On 06-26-19 just before 11:30 a.m., Hernando County deputies were dispatched to Zebrafinch Avenue in northwest Hernando County regarding a Marine Incident/Possible Drowning that was occurring in the inland waters of the Gulf of Mexico, just off the coast of Hernando County.

The caller told dispatchers that her husband had not resurfaced after jumping into the water to save the couple’s dog.

Stiff Prison Sentences, as well as hard work and dedication by local law enforcement, helped to create a decrease in crime for 2018.

Sheriff Al Nienhuis was pleased to announce an 11.4% overall decrease in the crime rate for Hernando County in 2018 as compared to 2017.

For six of the last seven years, Hernando County has experienced a decrease in crime (2014 experienced a 0.2% increase).

HCSO Searching for Teens who Escaped from teen treatment facility

The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s assistance in locating two juveniles who escaped Tuesday from Youth Opportunity Investments (formerly Eckerd Youth Camp), 201 Culbreath Road, Brooksville.

According to witnesses, at 8:31 p.m. a staff member was escorting two teens from the cafeteria back to their dorm when the juveniles decided to flee from the facility

The staff member told deputies the teens ran south into the woods, toward Pasco County.
