Weeki Wachee girls basketball awaiting another shot at postseason

WEEKI WACHEE- It’s tournament time for girls basketball all throughout the Hernando County area and the team that’s been most looking forward to getting back to this point is Weeki Wachee High School.

The Hornets (21-4) currently own the best record in the county and head into the Class 6A, District 7 tournament with their sights set on winning a district title and having homecourt advantage to begin the Class 6A playoffs. Weeki Wachee is the No. 1 seed heading into the 6A-7 tourney and faces the winner of the Lecanto-Central matchup in the second round.

Coming off a postseason appearance in the 2017-2018 campaign, the Hornets have another strong club and are the favorites to come away with a district crown despite holding one loss within the division. Weeki Wachee’s lone blemish came against district rival Crystal River, who is the No. 2 seed in 6A-7. The Pirates remain the top threat to unseating the Hornets at districts and should meet in the championship contest.

Weeki Wachee has one of the more well-balanced teams around and everything starts with the trio of Mykenna Corbett, Seytia Hill, and Shayleese Vazquez. The three are all averaging 12 points per game or more on the season and have been consistent. Corbett, who has surpassed the 1,000-point plateau for her high school career, is leading the team in scoring at 15.6 points per game. Corbett is also contributing in other areas, averaging four rebounds, 2.9 assists and 2.4 steals a contest.

Joining Corbett in the scoring department is the play of Hill, who has also surpassed the 1,000-point mark for her prep career. Hill is currently averaging 13 points per game and is also bringing down 10.5 rebounds a contest. She recently reached 1,000 rebounds for her prep career and has provided the Hornets with solid play in the frontcourt. Vazquez is averaging around 12 points a game and is another active rebounder, pulling down just over 10 boards a contest. With Hill and Vazquez, the Hornets always hold an edge in the rebounding department.

How far can this group go? If Weeki Wachee can pull off a 6A-7 district championship, snatching home-court advantage could be the key. The Hornets starting off with a region quarterfinal at home could help fuel a deep playoff run and a chance to get to Lakeland. The Hornets will go as far as its players will take them and the workload will be on the shoulders of Corbett, Hill, and Vazquez this February.
